Meet the teenager who took on tech giant Apple and won

The person who exposed Apple’s trick of “intentionally” slowing down older iPhones, forcing the mega-company into a global apology, has been revealed as a teenager from the US state Tennessee.

Tyler Barney, 17, said he exposed the issue after noticing a problem with his iPhone 6.

The high school student wrote about the problems on Reddit, according to a local newspaper, the Tennessean, after his phone “became buggy”.

“It was a big mess all the time. Even typing was painful. Seconds passed between keystrokes,” he said.

Fed up with using his own phone while he waited for an updated operating system to be released by Apple, he decided to try his brother’s iPhone 6.

Intrigued, Mr Barney tried to find out why that might be and found a suggestion that he replace his battery. When he did, his phone sped up instantly.

That’s when he took to Reddit, where he posts under the username TeckFire, to share his findings that Apple intentionally slows iPhones to force users into upgrading.

In an attempt to head off the damage, Apple issued an apology, saying: “We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down”.

It also revealed it is slashing the price of a replacement battery, and planning to show users exactly how much their battery has degraded.

“We apologise. There’s been a lot of misunderstanding about this issue, so we would like to clarify and let you know about some changes we’re making.

“First and foremost, we have never — and would never — do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades,” said Apple.
